Get Involved

Volunteering

Our chapter of Challah for Hunger at the University of Virginia is a student and volunteer run organization. We are always looking for more people to get involved in the process of baking or selling challah at UVa! All of our baking takes place at the Brody Jewish Center (1824 University Cir, Charlottesville, VA 22903), located right off of Rugby Rd. There is no sign-up necessary to volunteer as an individual on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, so please come as your schedule allows!

Directions to BJC: Walk down Rugby Road or take the Inner Loop. If you’re on the bus, get off at Beta Bridge. Walk straight ahead, take a left at University Circle, and then after a few blocks you’ll see the BJC (large white building) on your left!

Tuesdays (dough-making): 4-6 PM

This is when we make the dough – this involves mixing all the ingredients (flour, sugar, yeast, etc.) and then kneading the bread.

Wednesdays (braiding and baking): 4-6 PM

This is when we braid and bake our challah. No experience is necessary – we’ll teach you everything and you’ll have a blast learning!

***If you are an organization or plan on coming with at least 4 other individuals, please refer to our Group Volunteering page. We ask that you sign your group up ahead of time so we can schedule you in our calendar! Otherwise, individuals on Tuesdays/Wednesdays can drop by at any time during a shift without signing up.

Thursdays

On Thursdays, from 10 to 2 at the South Lawn, we sell our challah. Tabling is a semester long commitment.
